What can be done about glass that won't come clean no matter how hard you try?
Glass can become corroded which is a different issue from being “dirty”.
Reasons for corrosion include factors such as:
1-prolonged sprinkler system contact (impact from minerals in city water)
2-acid rain (air-born chemicals
that are deposited from rain)
3-dripping from gutters, etc (oxidized metal from aging gutters, metal trim or window frames)
This corrosion can impact the glass in several ways:
1-A scaly appearance
2-A kaleidoscope of color
similar to the surface of soap bubbles
3- A smoky appearance or drip lines that seem to wash off, but then reappear
When these or similar issues don’t respond to professional
window cleaning, there are other options. The key is how long the glass has been in this condition and
how much damage has been done to the surface.
Stage 1 Corrosion-Can be treated and removed by an acid wash and buffing; in addition to
primary cleaning techniques. Depending on the
severity, the window may have to be treated multiple times.
Stage 2 Corrosion-Can only be treated by replacing
the glass. At this stage, the glass surface which is actually porous and not smooth, has been damaged beyond
repair.
Obviously if a window cleaner is not diligent in his craft, windows may still
actually be dirty after a cleaning. On the other hand, corrosion should not be confused with “dirt”
and will require additional labor and expense. A window cleaning professional can advise after thorough
cleaning if an acid wash is needed. Surprisingly if it is caught at Stage 1 level, the treatment
can often dramatically improve the surface to a “like-new” appearance. How often do my gutters need cleaning?
Gutters should be cleaned at least annually and it's often advisable to do it TWICE A YEAR.
In the Fall; leaves clog your gutters and in the Spring; pollen, blooms & eroding particles from your shingles collect
due to Spring rains. If you live in a heavily wooded area, you may even need to have them cleaned more often.
How do I know when to get my gutters cleaned?
The best way is to request a guttersandglass.com Service Schedule. We will
periodically inspect your gutters based on surrounding folliage density and advise you if your gutters need
cleaning. There is no reason to charge you for an unneccesary cleaning. We believe that this honesty is one reason
that our customers keep coming back to us!
What happens
if I don't get my gutters cleaned enough?
Several
things could happen that are more costly than regular cleaning.
1-Clogged gutters overflow,
causing mildew and rotting.
2-Black overflow streaks form on the outside of your gutters.
3-Overflow
disturbs groundcover causing ruts in your landscaping.
4-Splash from overflow often permanently stains your
home's base.
5-Clogged gutters/downspouts do not direct rain away from your home, often causing mold or basement
leaks.
